Title:
The Learning Efficacy of Visualization in the Radical Teaching Method on Chinese Character Recognition—Using Experiencing Chinese: Living in China - Textbook One as a Case Study
In the context of the development of Chinese characters, the importance of radicals is self-evident. This research aims to explore the efficacy of visualization in the radical teaching method on Chinese character recognition, this method not only makes it easier for learners to grasp the meaning of Chinese characters, but also helps a lot in their long-term memory. The main purpose of this research is to reduce the pressure of Chinese character learning and to help learners to quickly memorize the radicals and word meanings, so as to help teachers spread the unique Chinese culture more smoothly.
The final result of this paper is to provide a set of methods for applying radical imaging to Chinese character teaching, making Chinese character teaching and learning more flexible, interesting, and no longer boring. This study also selects the most commonly used radicals and designs a teaching model to help teachers get the learning resources they need when using any textbooks. Besides, the researcher also suggests a quite appropriate distributing proportion of a specific session, so that teaching activities are not affected.
In order to achieve the aforementioned purpose, the selected research method tends to be qualitative research but also supported by quantitative research. Questionnaire survey and triangulation method are chosen as research tools to assess learner acceptance and the effectiveness of the approach. In the stage of actual teaching, this study takes the textbook “Experiencing Chinese: Living in China”-Textbook One as the main research object. The researcher selects four to six radicals from each unit to study first, and takes turns to introduce radicals first, then uses quizzes and analyzes the results of the learner's homework as well as questionnaire feedback to make the above method more reliable and perfect.
